The Color.Me by Kevin.Murphy Team Reveals This Season's In-Demand Shades

For the Color.Me by Kevin.Murphy team members, their latest collaboration, Art School, represents a return to artisan values or the idea of handmade art—all of which is reflected in the models’ hair color. “Art School masters the art of basic form and understanding—shades, formulating, technique and application—to create every look,” shares Color.Me design director Kate Reid. “This shoot made me re-evaluate all my color knowledge and bring it back to bold and clean shades, along with pure tones that evoke a sense of innocence and exploration. Kevin [Murphy] always brings ideas that I love, and we map it all out with a beautiful fashion twist to boot.”

Look: Tweed To create the appearance of rough woven texture, color the hair a bit deeper at the new growth and lighter at the roots and ends, with highlights placed on top. Tone to refine. Use theColor.Me Finishing Regimen after each color application. “We enhanced the texture of the hair through color by mixing shades to create a tweed-like piece of fabric: unique and individual, with a woolen texture that is soft to the touch and flexible in movement,” says Kate Reid. “The hair can be worn any way without seeing harsh or obvious lines.”

Rosé Hair Is Taking Over Summer 2018

Kate Reid

“The plays of pastels has made a full circle, and pink seems to be the stable one. It’s easy to wear, fades well, and seems to be a low commitment shade,” says Kate Reid, Design Director of COLOR.ME by KEVIN.MURPHY. “Pink in hair works best when it feels organic, even understated.”

It’s not one-size-fits-all, either. Depending on your base color, you can find the right rosé rendition for you. Brunettes can join in with deeper rosy hues, while light blondes can sink into peach tints. And when in doubt, follow your skin tone.

International hair care phenomenon, KEVIN.MURPHY, returned to the brand’s Australian roots to launch COLOR.ME by KEVIN.MURPHY, the brand’s hair color range for salons, stylists, and their clients. The launch event took place hot on the heels of a hugely successful COLOR.ME runway show held at Australian Hair Fashion Awards (AHFA), where COLOR.ME Design and Education Director, Kate Reid, was honored with the Excellence in Education Award.

The AHFA is Australia’s largest and most successful independent hairdressing awards program. The program has been growing steadily each year, and now attracts hundreds of entries from salons and individuals across Australia. Judged by a panel of international industry professionals, the win was a true testament to the incredible work Kate Reid has done with the COLOR.ME brand.

“Winning the award is such a celebration of my past four intense years,” said Reid. “It’s a privilege and helps to know my commitment and approach to a new way of education strategy has made an impact in the industry. It’s a real honor and makes me so proud of the whole team that has helped to achieve so much.”

Following the excitement of such a prestigious award, it was the perfect time to introduce Australia to COLOR.ME. Held at Edwards and Co. flagship salon in Sydney, Kevin Murphy, Kate Reid and COLOR.ME Australia ambassador, Jaye Edwards introduced the brand to guests and presented the line’s full color capabilities.

AHFA: ANNOUNCING THE 2018 WINNERS

Kate Reid

On Sunday 15th April, the great and the good of the Australian hairdressing industry descended on Sydney’s iconic Luna Park to celebrate our country’s largest and most successful independent hairdressing awards program, the Australian Hair Fashion Awards.

The AHFA’s took place in front of a sell-out audience of over 900 hairstylists, media and celebrities all gathered together to celebrate the best of the best in Australian hair, fashion and beauty.

Hosted by the beautiful Lauren Phillips, the evening also featured a special performance by 90’s music legend Ultra Naté who then went on to rock the crowd with a DJ set at the exclusive after party.

Special guest and hairstylist to the stars Jen Atkin flew in from LA to help celebrate the crème de la crème of Australian hair. Jen counts models Gigi and Bella Hadid, Chrissy Teigen, Kaia Gerber (that’s Cindy Crawford’s daughter to you and me!) and the whole Kardashian/Jenner clan as her clients. She also has an Instagram following of 2.3 MILLION fans, so to say she’s the hottest property in hairdressing right now is kind of an understatement!

Jen accompanied her great friend, Australian hair legend and brand guru Kevin Murphy who celebrated the launch of his incredible new line KEVIN MURPHY COLOR.ME by sponsoring the 2018 AHFA’s, where he created an incredible fashion and hair show which blew the audience away in its creativity and artistry!

AHFA’s have once again proved that they are the big guns when it comes to industry recognition. Creative Director of the Awards David Mannah says “Once again the international judging panel of the AHFA’s reflects the growth of our awards and the relevance of Australian Hairdressing on a world stage. When you have Eugene Souleiman and Sam McKnight, two gods of British Hairdressing in a room together to look at work from homegrown Australian talent, then you know you are doing something right!

Brand founder Kevin Murphy adds “Fashion has always played a huge role in the KEVIN.MURPHY brand so partnering with the AHFA’S to launch our revolutionary new product which is truly a celebration of hair and fashion seems like a perfect fit.

The 2018 photographic categories were judged in London by UK hairdressing royalty including Anthony Mascolo, Akin Konizi, Zoe Irwin, A-list colourist Nicola Clark, current British Hairdresser of the Year Sally Brooks catwalk favourite Eugene Souleiman and global hairdressing legend Sam McKnight.

2018 Business judges included: Christopher Crellin (CEO, American Influencer Awards), Daniel Abraham (Director, Platform Group), Paul Reynolds (Entrepreneur), Wendy El Khoury (Founder Wedded Wonderland, Creative Business Hub.)

2018 Product judges included Bonnie Gillies (Oz Beauty Expert), Carli Alman (Beauty Crew), Emily Algar (Byrdie Beauty), Erin Cook (Elle, Harper’s Bazaar), Kelly Baker (Body + Soul), Kelsey Ferencak (OK & NW Magazine), Kristy Johnson (Daily Mail), Michael Brown (Beauty Guru.)

SOUTHERN LIVING

Considering our current climate of hair color trends, featuring shades like bold blackberry and bright rose gold, we’re willing to cleanse our palettes for a brief moment by going back to the basics. No one said the basics need to be boring, though. We’ve come across a brilliant shade for brunettes that gives incredible dimension and fresh life to a classic hair color. KEVIN.MURPHY recently launched its 2018 COLOR.ME collection, and it’s chock-full of hair color inspiration for every style. Our current fave: cocoa butter. This blend starts with a beautiful chocolate brown base, but then runs wild with tiny touches of color, courtesy of babylights and subtle balayage, that include dark chocolate, toffee, caramel, and beige blondes.

Kate Reid, COLOR.ME by KEVIN.MURPHY Design Director, told us: “The trick is working with a multitude of dark blonde to brunette shades that mirror and reflect to create seamless dimension…Out with the thicker, chunkier balayage face framing and in with the softer seamless cascading flow in Cocoa Butter.”

It comes down to focusing on the whole, not the pieces. Creating a seamlessly blended look with multi-dimensional color, as opposed to using heavy balayage with pronounced color contrast, is the vision. If you’re a little worn and weary on trendy hair colors, this beautiful rendition of a classic might be your next move. Check out these cocoa butter hair color inspirations before booking your next salon appointment.

REAL SIMPLE

Kate Reid

The tropical drink best enjoyed while lounging on the beach has inspired the latest hair color trend. And if you're ready for a new (and a bit bold) change, this look is for you. The soft copper, apricot, and tangerine tones of what stylists are calling "tequila sunrise hair" come together beautifully (just like all the flavors of a tequila sunrise!).

According to Kate Reid, a colorist at COLOR.ME by KEVIN.MURPHY, the golden-red hue is best for warmer skin tones because it won’t wash you out.  If you’re someone who has a cooler undertone, don’t worry: tequila sunrise hair is still achievable. Allow a little room for regrowth or pops of your own natural hair color to break up the tangerine color.

POPSUGAR

Another day, another sweet hair color here to convince us that we need a new season shade switch-a-roo. Although Summer may not have arrived yet, this vibrant hue has us dreaming of beachside cocktails. Tequila sunrise is the new hair shade we're obsessing over. Who doesn't want to have hair matching their favorite cocktail? It even reminds us of another metallic color trend for 2018, gold hair

If you're unsure about whether tequila sunrise hair will suit you, Kate Reid, Color Me by Kevin Murphy's design director and colorist, says that tequila sunrise as well as coral, tangerine, and metallic apricots are best suited on warm skin tones that appear olive, beige, or golden in color and typically have green or brown eyes.

But if you don't have a warm skin tone, the look isn't out of reach. Her advice is to be sure to keep some of your natural shade in the hair, even if it's a small amount of regrowth, as this will help to offset the warmer color choice.

If you want to try tequila sunrise but aren't quite yet ready for commitment, Kate suggests trying a demi-color as it will wash out fairly quickly. Ask your colorist for Color Me Apricot, which will add luminous shine and a soft metallic apricot shimmer. Sounds just as dreamy as a cocktail in the sunshine!

Read on for some of our favorite tequila sunrise hues so you can rock the sunny color just in time for warmer weather.
