THE LIST: HAIR COLOUR YOU WILL BE ASKING FOR IN 2020

Kate Reid

Hair colors you'll be asking for in 2020

If you're considering a new hair color in 2020, there are a few things to keep in mind before choosing a shade. If you're going for a big change — like dark to light — you should know it's probably going to take a few trips. "I have to explain to clients and social media followers that to have, for example, Khloé Kardashian's blond takes time and commitment," Tracey Cunningham, celebrity colorist and creative consultant for Redken, told Glamour. "If you want a major change," she continued, "it may take more than one salon visit to achieve — especially if you want to keep your hair healthy."

It's also wise to heed your hairstylist's advice regarding color. It's advised to bring an inspo picture to the salon, but it's not always a good idea to be hellbent on the exact color. "It's optimal when we end up meeting halfway between their photo and my suggestions for what's best," Kari Hill, celebrity colorist for L'Oréal Paris, revealed.

Need some ideas? According to hairstylists, these are the hair colors worth trying in 2020.

2020 is all about contrasting hair colors

If your look is feeling stale, why not go for a bold hair color in 2020? Edward Tricomi, master hairstylist and co-founder of Warren Tricomi salons, said he expects more clients opting for contrasting colors. "If you're looking to achieve this look you want the contrast color to puddle in your hair," the expert told The List. "It won't be straight lines like traditional highlights, it's going to be more jagged, but it looks stunning." Can't quite picture it? "Billie Eilish would be a great example," Tricomi continued.

After all, PopSugar dubbed Billie Eilish the "hair color icon we didn't know we needed" in 2019. Although we can't help but love her locks, it's important to remember that a look like hers is going to take time. "If you look at [Eilish's Instagram] pictures where she has some roots and some regrowth, you can see her natural color," hairstylist Stephanie Diaz told PopSugar. "It's not super dark, but way darker [than the colors she dyes it to]." If you're transitioning from a natural dark brown, Eilish's look may take as long as eight hours to accomplish. Still, it could just be worth it.

Consider going for a "turmeric latte" hair color in 2020

"Move over Pumpkin Spice!" Kate Reid, multi-award-winning colorist and design director for COLOR.ME by Kevin Murphy, told The List. There's a new, delicious style to try. "Trends like turmeric latte shades are now hitting high street," Reid explained. "As the months get cooler, the summer blondes get warmer with golds and apricots being more predominate."

In the bitterly cold months of 2020, a turmeric hair color can at least give you the appearance of warmth, even if it can't actually do much to heat you up. Reid revealed that these rich, golden shades also give the wearer an "instant glow and health" to the skin, which is something we'll be sorely lacking as the temperatures drop. The expert continued, saying, "This helps to enhance our features, makes us look well rested, plus adds color to our cheeks." According to Reid, this color pairs best with warm and neutral skin tones.

Don't be afraid to embrace a red, red wine hair color in 2020

REFINERY 29: 5 BIGGEST HAIR COLOR TRENDS OF WINTER 2019

The transition from fall to winter can mean trouble for your skin (dryness) and your social life (too cold to leave your bed), but it's actually a great time for your hair. A chilly, zero-humidity climate means less frizz and more natural shine, and the current wave of hair-color innovation — face-framing highlights, glossy lowlights, and seamless balayage — means now's the best time for a salon visit.

This season, there's a fresh shade for every aesthetic, from neutrals, like smoky gold and stone blonde, to statement trends, like citrus sombré or "rogue" highlights. Scroll through for the pro's guide to winter hair color, and let it be the push you need to brave any cold front and take your good hair out every Friday night from now through NYE.

ELLE MAGAZINE: RED HAIR COLOUR IDEAS

Kate Reid

RED HAIR COLOUR IDEAS

While just two percent of the world's population is born with red hair (including baby Archie according to mom, Meghan Markle), you don't need a ginger gene to pull off the super-rare shade. “The key to achieving the most natural red hair is sticking within the copper or copper-gold family,” explains Matrix celebrity stylist George Papanikolas, who works with the Kardashians, Hailey Baldwin, Shay Mitchell and Nicole Richie. “Any highlights should also stay on tone and in the warm family to accent and compliment the copper base.”

As a former temporary redhead myself, admittedly one challenge can be maintaining your new shade at home. Red dyes notorious bleed faster than other colors, making faded an annoying but real reality. Celebrity hairstylist Chuck Amos— who works with Tracee Ellis Ross, Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, Solange, and Lion Babe—suggests opting for tinted shampoo or conditioners for colored hair . “This way, you can enhance your color during the wash process,” he explains. “Even if you're born with red tones, you usually need color boost on a regular basis.

Another sub-trend we’re predicting? Cinnamon spice hair, not to be confused with the pumpkin spice phenomena. KEVIN.MURPHY COLOR.ME Global Design Director Kate Reid explains this shade of stunning red is best-suited for those with “natural or golden skin tones. If you have this coloring, try turning to red, peach, coral, orange, amber, gold, and apricot hues this fall.” Inspired? Keep clicking to see all the most complementary reds.

FREE.STYLE #16 PINK is the neutral

PINK: The New Neutral

From soft baby doll pinks to bold shades of bubblegum, one thing is clear in the world of colour: pink hair isn’t going anywhere. COLOR.ME DESIGN.DIRECTOR Kate Reid gives us her rosy outlook on the modern pink and how to join the movement.

How has pink evolved throughout the years? I think it’s primarily the mindset around pink that has changed. Not just for teens or springbreakers anymore, pastels have been getting bigger and bigger every year and pink has truly become a staple in the salon. Now the question isn’t so much, should I go pink but rather, which shade of pink is for me?

Go-to shade for creating pink: My current obsession is ROSE. So stunning. This shade is so versatile and can be intensified for a bolder result or mixed with NATURAL to create a dense, long lasting pastel.

What skin tone does this look best on? Anyone can wear ROSE as its actually quite neutral. On cooler skin tones, work with lighter pastel shades or cooler dusty pinks. Warm skin types glow with dense, antiqued shades of pink or rose golds. Pink, and pastels in general, is such a huge fashion statement and these shades are timeless worn correctly. You will fall in love once you try it!

How do you maintain at home? AUTUMN.ANGEL (offered in select regions) is my go-to for extending the life of rose-hued hair at home. It’s like the ultimate lip gloss for your hair adding luminous shine while maintaining tonal reflect.

A Shade We're Still Swooning Over From The 2019 Met Gala!

Written by KEVIN.MURPHY   •   May 08, 2019

The 2019 Met Gala, themed “Camp: Notes On Fashion,” set the bar high when it came to making an entrance. While artists like Lady Gaga made a splash, other starlets took on a subtle approach that had just as much impact.

From donning extravagant outfits to changing up their hair colour, anything goes when it comes to the Red Carpet at the Met Gala. While some starlets wore wigs and literal over-the-top headpieces, some chose a wash of colour instead! This year, Bohemian Rhapsody star Lucy Boynton turned heads as she floated down the carpet in her Prada dress and JADE hair to match.

We chatted with COLOR.ME Design Director Kate Reid about the shade. “This month at KEVIN.MURPHY we launched our new JADE toner – a pastel shade that lasts around 4 weeks,” Reid explains.  “The great thing about this shade is that it will wash completely out, returning hair back to a beautiful blonde. Making it an ideal choice for individuals who love fast fashion and want a trendy look without the commitment.”

For picking the exact depth, Reid explains, “Paler and sheerer renditions of Jade, peppermint or spearmint work great on neutral to cooler skin tones, while more opaque versions can be personalised for deeper skin tones.”

Lucy Boynton shows us how and absolutely rocks this whimsical feminine look at the Met Gala and Kate Reid shows us just how to get the shade!

THE STYLISH, PINK PRODUCTS YOU NEED TO ADD TO YOUR SPRING WARDROBE

The Stylish, Pink Products You Need to Add to Your Spring Wardrobe

APRIL 20, 2019 – 3:40 PM – 0 COMMENTS

By RACHEL WEINGARTEN

After what felt like the longest winter outside of Westeros, spring is finally here! Sort of. Even if the weather isn’t fully cooperating, that’s no reason to still be hiding under your winter layers.

Here are some ways to brighten up your look with every shade of pink while adding some cute seasonal details to your look without breaking the bank.

Refresh your face: All that indoor heating left you feeling parched? Rael’s new Youth Island Sheet Mask with Collagen is an anti-aging mask infused with hydrolyzed collagen and amino acids. Collagen and amino acids restore elasticity, smoothing fine lines & wrinkles. It’s a nice way to pamper your skin after too much time spent bundled up.

A cute boot: Not ready to give up on your boots just yet? Frye Ray Harness Back Zip come in a muted mauve pink that’s the perfect neutral for everything from dark wash jeans to fluttery spring skirts.

Skirting the issue: Speaking of skirts, can we all collectively swoon at the cuteness of this one? Boden’s Victoria Embroidered Skirt is fully lined and comes in a super-flattering A-line style, and hides a multitude of sins, even if you packed on a few extra pounds while hibernating this winter.

A touch of (cream) blush: Jane Iredale In Touch Cream Blush in Clarity: comes in stick form so it’s incredibly easy to apply. Dot on the balls of your cheeks or blend with a sponge. Perfect to keep in your desk when the overhead office lighting has you looking more cadaverous than in-control.

Sweet nails: Smith & Cult Nail Lacquer—Pillow Pie: Note to Queen Elizabeth II and Duchess Kate, if you’re looking for a subtle spring mani update, this one’s for you. (Here’s the real reason Kate never wears colorful nail polish.) This richly pigmented, chip-resistant formula means manicures last longer. Even better, the eight-free formula means it’s free of a slew of potentially harmful ingredients. (Giving this one an A++ for being professional, ladylike and absolutely gorgeous. Get it at Dermstore).

Top it off: Remember when we were little and everyone had things like spring coats? If you splurge on only one thing this season, may I suggest a new warm spring coat? The newest styles are more like loosely constructed sweaters and tend to flatter almost every form. I’m madly in love with my new pink herringbone hooded spring coat from Social Eras. I can’t remember receiving this many compliments on a single garment. (And don’t panic if you see that the largest size is large, they are cut beautifully and generously so you can probably find one that fits.)

Pink hair, don’t care: Actress Maisie Williams, (Arya on Game of Thrones) has been sporting a gorgeous lilac/pink hair color. If you’re wondering if pink hair is still a thing, the answer is definitely yes. Salon pro haircare brand KEVIN.MURPHY’s Global Design Director Kate Reid offered some insights on pink hair. “Pastels have been getting bigger and bigger every year.” Right now “the question is more about which shade of pink rather than pink as a whole. Rose pink is our go-to for 2019 and to complete the SweetHeart look (which she created for Valentine’s Day).

Some pink hair tips from Reid:

  • Rose pink works with both warm and cool skin tones and actually sits quite neutral.

  • On cooler skin tones, work with lighter pastel rose shades or cooler dusty pinks and roses.

  • Warm skin types should ask for dense roses, antique rose to rose golds to really make the skin glow.
