MODERN SALON

Kate Reid

Hair color always makes a statement, as salon professionals know. According to the creative leaders at KEVIN.MURPHY, today's trending color message is more of an exhale than a shout. They point to contemporary neutrals inspired by "feeling confident in your own skin" and are helping salons bring the trend to life with COLOR.ME NUDES, a new collection of four shades to add a glowing, velvety blush tone to any blonde. Are you ready to create—and profit from—the new NUDES look?

It's a natural shift, according to COLOR.ME Design Director Kate Reid. "High fashion naturals are a staple of celebrities and A-listers," she says, but also perfect for any client in your chair. "The beauty of our new NUDES is they create harmonious shades that compliment all hair and skin tones."

NUDES are powered by micro pigment technology and BEIGE.VIOLET tones that create glowing, blush hues. On natural hair, the NUDES create a powdery, mink-y result, and on pre-lightened hair, a pink-ish hue. Like all COLOR.ME shades, the NUDES are designed to deliver a multi-tonal finish and brilliant shine. The four NUDES shades are:

CLASSIC BLUE PANTONE for 2020

Kate Reid

Pantone’s 2020 Colour of the Year is Classic Blue: Maybe it’s next new hair colour. A timeless and enduring blue hue, Classic Blue is elegant in its simplicity. What could be better than that in your hair? We sat down with Kate Reid, expert colourist and Design Director for Color.Me by Kevin Murphy, to get the scoop on all things Classic Blue.

Kate Reid says “squid ink blue” has started to come through hair over the past few months, so it’s no surprise that we’ll see Pantone inspired Classic Blue colour take over. Reid’s work is all about innovation and bringing fashion to the hair, so we asked her a few questions you must know if you’re looking to take the plunge into Classic Blue.

Who wears Classic Blue best?

Classic Blue colour is worn best on cooler skin tones with pink cheeks, whiter to blue skin under tones. If navy or classic blue is too dark think about trying frosted shades like ice blue or pearl instead as these tones also are huge for 2020 but on a much lighter depth.

Have we seen any celebs wear Classic Blue?

Classic blues are worn best like Billie Eilish, for that rock edge or that darker mysterious shades. These can be added over dark depths to add incredible shine or over pre lightened areas for a brighter pop.

Will your blue ever turn green?

When hair is lightened, it can expose unwanted warmth. This yellow that is exposed can be kept at bay by using products like BLONDE.ANGEL WASH and TREATMENT every time you wash your hair as this helps to keep the yellow eliminated, which is why it turns green over time.

HOW TONERS FIT INTO YOUR STYLE

Whether you regularly visit your stylist for colour or like to keep things more low-key – having an understanding of colour and what to ask for in the salon is essential. From contrasting and complementary colour theory and the difference between warm, cool, and neutral tones, these are just a few of the beauty secrets stylists want clients to be tuned in to. Not sure where to start with TONERS? DESIGN.DIRECTOR Kate Reid offers her advice. “These fashion-forward reflects are the new staples of the salon. I love using LAVENDER and CRYSTAL to cool off any blonde or to filter violet or red shades to create a unique long lasting coolness. And I’m obsessed with the new GOLD. TONER. I love using it with APRICOT to create a new neo pop of colour or with CRYSTAL for a natural sun kissed effect with lots of shine.”

A PERSONALISED TOUCH

Adding to this perspective on design, “Everything in the whole world is more personalised today, and this continues with hair,” says DESIGN.DIRECTOR Kate Reid in a recent Conversations with Kevin episode – NEW COLOR.ME TONERS: CRYSTAL, GOLD, LAVENDER with Founder and Creative Director, Kevin Murphy. Listen along to learn just how these new TONERS will help change the results stylists are able to achieve in the salon as we continue to push the envelope and find ourselves through more personalised style because colour is at the helm of it all.

Wedding Hair Trends of 2020 You Need to Know About

Searching for the perfect weddng hairstyle? While Instagram and Pinterest are useful tools for gathering bridal beauty inspiration, to-be-weds can also turn to wedding hair trends to see what might work best. Whether you’re a fashion-forward bride-to-be or you just want fresh fringe ideas, we went ahead and tapped professional stylists to get their thoughts on the biggest hairstyle concepts for 2020. Plus, we cross-referenced popular runway styles from Bridal Fashion Week too. See seven wedding hair trends that’ll pop this year, according to the experts. Once you find the perfect style, work with a professional hair stylist to get your desired bridal look.

1. Chignon

What’s old is new again—at least when it comes to wedding hair trends. This old-school style was the most popular celebrity wedding hairstyle in 2019—which is why we predict it’ll continue surging in 2020. Stars like Hailey Bieber, Lea Michele and Sadie Robertston all rocked this clean, classic look.

  1. “A chignon is a hairstyle that is placed in the desired location at the back of the head. It can either be a knot or a coil of the entire ponytail,” says Paul Mitchell educator and Salon Tres owner Emma Fitzgerald. Looking to steal the style? Check out her detailed instructions on how to achieve a chignon.

  2. Twilighting

    KATE REID

Meet Twilighting, a more subtle spin on the ever-popular balayage trend. “Balayage on the hair is usually over-lightened and can fade into a brassy mess, resulting in a lot of upkeep,” says Kate Reid, COLOR.ME director at KEVIN.MURPHY. The Twilight trend is low-maintenance and easily-achieved with a subtle variation of shades that are just two to three shades lighter than the hair. As there’s no bleach or lightener used, those who want to rock the latest color trend won’t have to worry about any brassy fading.

BANG BANG:

Kate Reid

INTRODUCING BANG BANG

Embarking on a new decade, KEVIN.MURPHY is excited for a year full of innovation and education. There is a big shift going on in the world of beauty and hairdressers are at the heart of it. Trends this year will see a focus on individuality within an ever-growing movement to improve the welfare of our planet. Encompassing both, the new collection from KEVIN.MURPHY – BANG BANG – explores exactly that.

The Inspiration

When we began diving into the inspiration for this new collection, we were drawn to the Brit pop culture of the 90s for various reasons. “In the ’90s, fashion evolved from “uniform” to a form of influence. It was a decade when the terms “reduce”, “reuse” and “recycle” became widely used as we gained awareness of the impact we were having on the world’s environment.” – Kevin Murphy

These sentiments go hand-in-hand with our artistic vision for the year and The Choices We Make. One of our most important initiatives, Ocean Waste Plastic, starts the decade off strong with packaging that directly reduces plastic waste in our oceans. Learn more about Ocean Waste Plastic here and keep reading to see the styles we’ll be exploring this year.

COLOUR, CUT, STYLE

Taking cues from 90s Brit pop fashion, modern hairdressing reiterates the idea that individuality is present at each turn – colour, cut, and style. BANG BANG, and the education surrounding it, addresses the diversity of each client’s style to enhance it. In addition, technique based vintage trends are modernised, which gives stylists the tools needed for real-life salon situations.

COLOUR

Specialised parting techniques emphasise natural texture as placement gives off the appearance of effortlessly lived-in color, no matter the shade.

“In our 2020 Education Collection, colour techniques have been designed to enhance any length or texture of hair, as well as be personalised for each and every client which allows you, the colourist, to unlock unlimited possibilities. We hope you enjoy the various sectioning techniques, applications and formulas that we’ve created.” – KATE REID, DESIGN.DIRECTOR

RADIANT FLUX: The Perception of Color

Kate Reid

If we dive into the relationship of colour, and the way our eyes perceive it, we know that it doesn’t exist without light. The way in which light is reflected and its relationship with shadows is how we enhance and create depth within a hair colour and a style. Therefore, addressing hair colour placement and the way it works symbiotically with a style is paramount. This is exactly what our latest COLOR.ME Collection – RADIANT FLUX – is all about. Set in a vintage building in Prague, it was the light that inspired the team, the shades, and the styles.

COLOUR

Hair colour will be shifting this season as it takes a step away from “warm” shades to embrace illuminating gold tones. The techniques are also transforming, with artistic approaches inspired by classic artists. Drawing on structures within the overall style, lights and shadows are deliberately painted to achieve an entirely new attitude. Soft, creamy golds, apricots, iridescent violets, and deep dark blues will all come into play this season as colours are sculpted and shaded into modern radiant finishes.

“Radiant Flux combines new product innovation with influences from fashion for a collection that delivers new service opportunities for the salon and unprecedented results. Never before have we seen colour this brilliant and hair with lasting integrity… until now.” Kate Reid COLOR.ME Design Director

SALON TODAY: 5 Ways Becoming an educator changed my life

Kate Reid

Kate Reid, Kevin.Murphy's Color.Me Global Design Directo on stage doing what she loves.

Ever wonder why encouraging one of your team members to pursue an educational track could help both them and your salon flourish. Kate Reid, Kevin.Murphy’s Color.Me Global Design Director Kate Rate recently gave some thought to how becoming an educator has changed her life her life personally and professionally, and she recently shared this blog with SALON TODAY:

I never set out to become an educator. As I grew as a hairdresser, I found greater satisfaction in educating others. I was driven by a few different reasons, but it ultimately came down to using my creativity in a new way.

Creating content, inspiring others, plus developing new ideas can be implemented in everyday tasks for any educator or hairdresser who is driven by fast fashion. I want to help improve the way people execute, engage, and function in their daily work. These aspects were all key to how I ended up as an educator.
